As SLPs and OTs, we are trained in school to work with different races and cultures. However, after graduating it is up to us to make sure we remain diligent in supporting and amplifying Black, Indigenous, and people of color’s voices. Our current and future staff will have access to the following resources and will be required to choose 1-2 resources to engage with in depth. This list is not all inclusive. Please share any helpful resources you are you using in the comments.
  • “Raising Our Hands” by Jenna Arnold (book) --“How white women can stop avoiding hard conversations, start accepting responsibility, and find our place on the new front lines.”
  • “So You Want to Talk About Race” by Ijeoma Oluo (book) -- helps people of all races have constructive and useful conversations about race in America.
  • “Teaching For Black Lives” by Dylan Watson, Jesse Hagopian, Wayne Au (book) - Teaching for Black Lives grows directly out of the movement for Black lives. We recognize that anti-Black racism constructs Black people, and Blackness generally, as not counting as human life. Throughout this book, we provide resources and demonstrate how teachers connect curriculum to young people's lives and root their concerns and daily experiences in what is taught and how classrooms are set up. We also highlight the hope and beauty of student activism and collective action.
  • Virtual Talking about Race in Classroom -- a live online training June 11th and 12th.
  • Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Human Services, Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Treatment Planning, Cultural Competencies for Counselors and Other Clinical Staff, Introduction to Cultural Competence  --  These courses have a small fee but could possibly count toward continuing education for professionals. Check with your local and national association.
  • Understanding Trauma and Families of Color course for therapists and mental health professionals- while this online course is directed for social workers, it can be beneficial for other pediatric health professionals, such as speech and occupational therapists.
  • Black SLPs Facebook discussion ~2 hrs -- while not able to be counted as a CEU, this is a highly engaging and informative Facebook discussion that can be played back. Recommended to all speech language pathologists.
  • Important Aspects of Diversity and Culture in Speech Language Pathology -- this is offered by speech pathology.com
  • Ted Talks --
    • An Interview with the founders of Black Lives Matter
    • What it Takes to be Racially Literate
    • Talks to help you understand racism in America
  • 26 Mini Films for exploring race, bias and identity with students -- The NY Times has put together 26 mini films which are helpful to any pediatric health professional (and teacher) to continue our education on racial bias.
